Choosing Branches Once we find downed trees, we carefully select the limbs that will make good cat trees - resonably sized, cool looking branches of sturdy wood.
Stripping and Sanding Stripping the bark is one of the more difficult jobs in tree preparation. The longer it is "aged", the more color the wood has but the harder it is to peel. It is also delicate work and must be done by hand. Some trees can take several days to strip and sand. The trees are oiled and varnished to give them elasticity and durability.

Balancing An imporant part of the process includes leveling the bottom of the tree so that it can stand upright on its own without support. The addition of the base, designed to support the extra weight of the cat on the perches, makes the already balanced tree fully ready for duty.
Perch Construction The unique shape and branches of each tree dictates the number and placement of perches. Cardboard mock perches are used to help visualize an arrangement that works best on each tree. This is a trial and error, "artisic" endeavour. Some trees will remain in "perch production" stage for many weeks until we are satisfied that it is just right. Once the perch scheme is finalized, the wooden perches are cut, afixed to the tree and carpeted. |
